Today is the Garden Party at Sonny’s in Aksarben Village. The event is organized by area musician Madeline Reddel. It is a free festival, all ages are welcome, and it will feature artists from all over the country as well as our local area. The lineup is all women-fronted, and the event started in Reddel’s backyard before growing to Aksarben Village this year. I did an interview with Reddel for The Reader, talking about the event, which you can read here.
Artists performing include headliner Abby Holliday from Nashville, Autumnal from Denver, Honey Marmalade from Brooklyn, and Keo & Them from Wichita. Ione, who used to live in the area but now comes to us from Chicago, will also be performing, along with local artists Grace Lundy, LyriQ LaShay, Peachy Beaches, and Twin Pages.
I believe the last time we saw soulful blues artist Jackie Venson in Nebraska was during the blues festival tour that Slash organized at The Astro. She performed alongside Slash, Keb’ Mo’, and ZZ Ward. On Saturday evening, she will be headlining the legendary Zoo Bar stage in Lincoln.
Secret Weapon is one of Omaha’s most celebrated cover bands (according to the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards), and they are celebrating their 20th anniversary! Who would have thought they’d make it to 20 years? Yeah, I didn’t think so — but they did! They’re planning to pull out every trick in the book when they celebrate on Saturday at The Waiting Room.
There is a fun all-day event happening in Malvern, Iowa, today. Lash LaRue, Matt Cox, Prairie Gators, Swampboy Blues Band, and Kris Lager Band will all be performing at Art Church for an outdoor event.
Singer-songwriter Dan Tedesco will be performing at The Sydney this evening. The Chicago native released The Overwhelming last October. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him, but he will definitely keep your attention with his playing and performance.
Pure pop songwriter Ben Folds will perform two nights with the Omaha Symphony on May 9th and 10th. Enjoy all of his hits from the piano pop star, along with probably some fun surprises. The concerts will take place at the Holland Center. Congratulations to the Omaha Buzz ticket winner—Austin!
Saturday is the third night of the annual Run For The Roses festival at Brokedown Palace. The festival runs for three days and features both indoor and outdoor performances. Please note that there have been some schedule changes, so be sure to check the venue’s event page to stay updated on the lineup. Tonight’s performers include ReXperience, Eva Bleu Band, Ross Koley, Exile on "O" St, Valley Creatures, Daniel & the Deliverance and Cruz Control.
Also happening on Saturday: King Iso with Awax at the Bourbon Theater in Lincoln; Blue House at The Jewell on Capitol; Tony Logue and the 184 at Bucks Bar and Grill; and JACK with Estrogen Projection, forming a great local lineup at Duffy’s Tavern. On the same night, you can catch an all-local lineup at the Slowdown featuring Evandale, Alyeska, and Beast Eagle.
On Sunday, Ne Obliviscaris, an extreme progressive metal band from Australia, will be performing at The Waiting Room.
