Lincoln dream pop, dark dave, and synth project Vempire has released a new song called “Always Forever by Cults.” The song is not a cover of the band Cults’ song “Always Forever.” It’s a slice of longing, somber dream pop and possibly the best song the duo has released so far. I have enjoyed all of their output up to this point, and they are building a nice little catalog. However, this song seems to elevate the songwriting, production, and playing as they continue to evolve. I could easily hear this on radio stations such as KEXP, The Current, and XMU.
Zoo Fest has been announced for July 11th and 12th in Lincoln. The festival, which takes place outside the Zoo Bar, celebrates the legendary blues joint each year. This year, the focus is on touring artists and local acts that have become mainstays of the bar and favorites among its patrons. Long-running rhythm and blues band Bel Airs is a longtime favorite of the Zoo crowd, as is gritty powerhouse vocalist Carolyn Wonderland. She has a new album coming out, as I saw an advance copy in my mailbox recently. While it’s common to see Mike Zito perform in the area, when he joins the Blood Brothers with Albert Castiglia, things really ramp up.
The Friday lineup will feature Lincoln native Kris Lager Band closing out the night, promising a celebratory party on stage.
Omaha’s Sailing In Soup will kick off Saturday with their takes on favorite tunes. Church of the Blues features many Lincoln musicians performing their interpretations of classic blues numbers. Soulful blues pianist and vocalist Kelly Hunt returns to the Zoo Bar on Saturday, where she is a favorite. The soulful blues continues with Tommy Castro and The Painkillers, who are touring with their latest Alligator Records release, Closer to the Bone. Lincoln natives and current International Blues Challenge champions Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal will wrap up the festival on Saturday night.
Friday Night Lineup
Pure pop songwriter Ben Folds will perform two nights with the Omaha Symphony on May 9th and 10th. Enjoy all of his hits from the piano pop star, along with probably some fun surprises. The concerts will take place at the Holland Center. Congratulations to the Omaha Buzz ticket winner—Austin!
Contemporary Christian family band We The Kingdom will be at Rococo Theater in Lincoln tonight. They will be stripping it down and going unplugged and telling stories and singing songs.
Country singer Dylan Scott will be bringing the hits from his decade long career including numbers one’s “My Girl” and “New Truck” to Steelhouse Omaha tongiht.
Tonight is the second night of the annual Run For The Roses festival at Brokedown Palace. The festival runs for three days and features both indoor and outdoor performances. Please note that there have been some schedule changes, so be sure to check the venue’s event page to stay updated on the lineup. Tonight’s performers include David Simms Quartet, Randall Gruber, Unbroken Chain, Mace Hathaway, Magū, Phandemic, and Zach Kurmel.
Other events tonight include guitarist and singer-songwriter Quinn Sullivan at the Holland Music Club. Matt Cox will be performing at The Jewell on Capitol. For a country option (not Dylan Scott), check out Rob Leines at Bucks Bar and Grill. Psycofest will bring the rock to The Royal Grove in Lincoln tonight. Melody Trucks—daughter of Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band—will bring her show, which took place in Omaha last night, to the Zoo Bar in Lincoln.
The Slowdown hosts a disco dance night, and there’s a Soundry Experimental Music Jam at Church/Art House on Vinton this evening.
