Nebraska Native Drops Debut Album, Indigo Girls, VNV Nation And More Tonight
Nebraska native Ingrid Griffin drops her new album It’s All Just Songwriting Material today on streaming sites. HERE are links to her music, videos and more. Griffin attends University of Southern California, where she is to graduate soon. Her songs range from pop country to folk or Americana like pop music. The strongest example of the later is “Aphrodite'“, a plucky pop song full of stringed instruments. Many of the songs will relate to persons her own age, as she says in her press release, the “album weaves desperate moments trying to win back a past love (“Throwing Pebbles,” track 3), feeling out-of-place at college parties (“Red Cup,” track 4), and more. “This album is a tapestry of the hopes, heartaches, epiphanies, mistakes, and adventures from my four years of college.”
There are songs that people of all ages can relate to such as the previously mentioned “Aphrodite”, “Dancing In My Mind” and one of the bonus tracks “Mountaintop View”. Another bonus track,“John Cusack Movie”, I loved, because Cusack is my favorite actor, but also I like the vibe of the song and the instrumentation in it. Griffin will be touring the Midwest this summer and it is a family affair as her drummer father will be joining her. The Nebraska dates are June 22nd at Zephyr Fest in York, July 13th at John C. Fremont days in Fremont and July 17th at the Hub Farmers Market in Lincoln
Tonight, the Indigo Girls return to the area to perform at The Astro in La Vista. I think they might be the group or very close to the group I have loved the longest. I, as a teenager obsessed with hair metal, Ozzy Osbourne, and Iron Maiden, was exposed to the Indigo Girls, and somehow it spoke to me, and I credit them with opening me up to so much more music. So, not only do they hold a nostalgic and special place in my heart, but I have followed them every step of the way and enjoy their entire catalog. What a catalog they have amassed, too. One of the best things about Indigo Girls shows is that they are one of the few acts anymore that change their set list up nightly. For most shows, you can go online and figure out what songs are happening and when. Not so much with the Indigo Girls. I have seen shows when they didn’t even do “Closer to Fine," but I am sure they will tonight as they are riding on a new wave of awareness with that song being a big part of the Barbie movie. I highly recommend grabbing a ticket for this show.
Slowdown tonight will find VNV Nation coming to town for what I think is their first performance here. The British electronic duo have been doing this for thirty years and have evolved their music through industrial, trance, EBM and synthpop. I am concerned for our synth and dark-wave music fans in town, as this is the third show this week they possibly will attend. Hopefully the blaring sun this weekend has kept them inside during the day getting the appropriate amount of rest.
Here is the rest of tonight’s happenings. If you want to plan out the rest of your week you can do so HERE with the full weeks calendar.
