I know what battle rap is and have witnessed plenty, but I did not know that grindcore or punk rock battle sets are a thing. After Googling it, I still am unsure if it is an actual thing. It will happen tonight at The Snowball Showdown at The Waiting Room, though, when bands go up against each other for supremacy. They have been going at each other on social media like the lead-up to a wrestling pay-per-view. Should be brutal and fun. You will see Ex-Nihilo, Jiblets, Traffic Death, Disrepair, Gutbomb, M.A.N., Blowing Chunks, and The Shidiots all battle. There will be punk, crust punk, hardcore, grindcore, noise, metal, metalcore, and more. I wish there was some snow because a snowball fight between these bands on Maple Street would be fun.
It always messes with me when artists I have never heard of sell out rooms in town. I run a record store, consume and write about music all day long, and when I am not, I am reading about it. Country artist Hudson Westbrook sold out The Admiral and is making me feel out of touch. I think he is still in college at Texas Tech; at least he was when he released his self-titled 2024 album. It is not just Omaha; he is selling out venues for months into 2025. If you go on the secondary market for tickets, please be careful.
Americana band The Farewell Season will released their debut album, Funeral Flowers, in December. The band is an Omaha/Minneapolis hybrid featuring Nate Gasaway (The Big Deep), Taylor Stein (Ten O'Clock Scholars), Justin "Crowbass" Crow, and Aaron Hildebrand. They will have a vinyl release party tonight at Reverb Lounge with Bazile Mills and Frederick Julius.
More happenings tonight include Matt Cox and the Marauders at Jewell on Capitol, Funk Trek and Parfait at B. Bar., Strange Pleasures at Shakedown Street, and in Lincoln Mike Semrad and the Riverhawks will be on the bowling alley lanes at Madsens. The Down Under Lounge will host a fundraiser with youth program Blackbird Rock Co., and after that, Brian Finn will spin some funk and soul records.
