The big news yesterday was the announcement that Guitars & Cadillacs would return to Omaha after a couple decades away. The country dance club will return to the Miracle Hills area at Miracle Hills Park, which is looking to be making a comeback as an entertainment area with Funny Bone also returning. No word on if it will host live music, just be a country dance club, or both. The Omaha Guitars & Cadillacs had live music in their mix and nationally touring acts also. Many remember seeing Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe, Sebastian Bach of Skid Row, and Matthew Sweet at the venue.
My biggest memory of Guitars & Cadillacs was actually at the Lincoln location when I judged a battle of the bands. It’s a long story, but it involved Zwarte, a band that had a very young Darren Keen in it, a near riot, and eventual vandalism of vehicles (not by Darren Keen or Zwarte). That high-up stage at the Lincoln venue was wild. We will see soon what this new venue will be all about.
Speaking of Matthew Sweet, he posted an update on his health issues yesterday. You can read the post HERE. The musician who had a lot of success with his albums Girlfriend, Altered Beast, 100% Fun and more suffered a stroke while on tour in Canada. Sweet, has resided in Omaha for quite some time and did his rehab at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital here in town. He has high praise for the hospital and it’s staff as well as the many people who have supported him through the Go Fund Me Set up for him. Sweet doesn’t know if he will ever play guitar again, or be able to do the visual art he had been doing, but he has stated he is not giving up on expressing himself artistically. His Go Fund Me is still open and you can donate HERE.
New Jersey ska-core band Public Serpents will be at 1867 this evening in Lincoln. The band is fronted by Skwert who was of notorious New York punk band Choking Victim. They released the album The Bully Puppet in 2023. They will be on a lineup with Bombs Blast, DSM-5 and Blowing Chunks.
This is cool. Brother Ali will bring his independent hip-hop show to Reverb Lounge tonight. Along for the ride is Ant from Atmosphere who has put out a couple of outstanding instrumental hip-hop albums this year that I really like. Brother Ali and Ant have an album coming out on Valentines Day 2025 called Satisfied Soul. They just released an EP this a few weeks back. Dee-1 is also on the lineup.
Tonight will find improvisational music happening at Project Project on Vinton Street. V. Vecker from Vancouver will be stopping by. The multi-instrumentalist has been the soundtrack to my morning as I have been listening to this stunning 2020 album by his ensemble called Coastal Depression. According to the event page his solo compositions revolve around looped sax and synth. Smith/Davis and Jessen/Kay will also perform.
Here are the rest of this evenings happenings.
