Stacked Weekend Begins-GRRRLCamp and Four Winds Festival, Country Star, Rising Americana Performer And More
This evening is the first day of GRRRL Camp at Falconwood Park. When Maha announced they were taking a year off, I did not predict a festival would come along that would bring those acts that are of interest to me and that I get excited for personally. GRRRL Camp does that and more. Two albums that I would currently put in my top ten of 2024 are Hurray For The Riff Raff’s latest, The Past Is Still Alive (currently my top album of the year), and Mannequin Pussy’s album I Got Heaven. Not just me, either. Those albums are getting raves all over the media and from fans.
Now, add on that Indigo De Souza who performed at Maha recently and who has put out three killer albums on Saddle Creek, including last year's All of This Will End, and you have three headliners that I think could rival any Maha lineup as far as my personal preferences go. That is not all, though. Shannon and The Clams returned with a new album, and they will be at GRRRL Camp, and this area has always been fond of that band. Girl Ray is coming from the UK, and if you have not heard of them, you need to do so now. They are so much fun and might steal a little bit of the show from some of the other acts. There is so much more including some fantastic area and regional artists. GRRRL Camp happens this evening and all day tomorrow.
You may be into a whole different thing, and if so, you have options. One of them is the massive three day festival happening at The Waiting Room and Reverb Lounge. Four Winds Festival will feature hip-hop artists such as King Iso, Otis Julius, Taebo The Truth, C10, Lardi B and Matt Phoenix. You will also get a chance to see various genres of rock music, including sets from He Is Legend, From This Day Forward, Alyeska, Names Without Numbers, and Feel Good. There is much more-I was counting and gave up around fifty acts and had plenty more to go. There will be a magical hallway between The Waiting Room and Reverb, and you can bounce around and check out as much as you can possibly handle. Our friends at Nice Enough Entertainment put a lot into this and deserve your consideration.
Now, if you are not into indie pop and rock, hip-hop, or harder rock, you may be saying, What about me? Well, if you are a blues fan, you can head out to The Astro and see the S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival curated by Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. Yes, Slash will be there, as will ZZ Ward, Keb Mo, and Jackie Venson. This show has been moved to The Astro from the Amphitheater portion of the venue.
You hate to call an artist like John Moreland a bubbling under or rising artist, as he has had like eight albums and many years under his belt. He is one of those artists that you just feel is going to have the moment that will make him a household name (in households that like good singer-songwriters), but one would think that his latest album, Visitor, would be that album, as it’s one of his best, if not his best. Anyway, he is at Slowdown this evening and you should consider that, unless you are already one of those households that know his name and are probably already going if that is the case.
Country star Brantley Gilbert is show number two this weekend on the three-day run for artists at Stir Cove. Gilbert is known for country rockers and hip-hoppers such as “Son of the Dirty South” and “Rolex on a Redneck." He just released the new song “Me and My House” yesterday, and I think he has a new album in the pipeline. I am sure he will tell you all about it tonight.
What else? The Zoo Bar has Sailing In Soup, and around the corner at Duffy’s is Fox Paw, After Arizona and Alkyvad. The Swell Gibson Organ Trio is at Harney Street Tavern, and Travis is your Rockbrook Village act this week. There is a lot more happening, and you can check it all out below. If you want to plan the rest of the weekend, you can do that right HERE
