RIP Jeffrey Runnings of For Against, Fat Tuesday Lineup, a Whole Lot of Touring Rock Bands on Wednesday
Tuesday and Wednesday Live Music Lineup
Area musician and music fan Jeffrey Runnings passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. Runnings was in the band For Against, based out of Lincoln, whose music found an audience well beyond Nebraska. You may have also seen him working in record stores over the years or shopping beside you as he curated his amazing collection.
For Against began releasing music in the mid-80’s with a dream pop and post punk sound that would probably surprise many when they found out is was being made in Nebraska. The band had many lineup changes over the years but continued to make music up until 2009. The band easily made some of the most important music to come from Nebraska, and I have to highly recommend digging into their catalog if you have never done so. Their sound is actually as much in line with what is happening musically today as it was at the time it was created. There are so many dream pop and shoegaze bands coming out these days, and when I listen, many times, I am comparing them to the sounds of For Against and Jeff.
Runnings also put out solo material including the incredible Primitives and Smalls from 2016. He just released a new song, the beautiful “Batman Forever,” last month. I will include the video here for you to check out. There is a forthcoming album from Independent Project Records, and when details emerge, I will share that here. There is also a GoFundMe that was set up some time ago to help deal with costs involved in Jeff’s hospice and care. If you want to contribute, you can do so HERE.
RIP Jeff-Thank you for the music and friendship.
It is Fat Tuesday, and we have bad weather coming, but there are happenings around this event tonight. Make sure to check to see if they are still happening before venturing out. I am sure there are a bunch happening at places that do not host live music regularly, and with my process of putting together the calendar, I would not see those. Feel free to add any in the comments. I do see that Hector Anchondo will be at Mouth of the South for a lunchtime performance at noon and with his band at 6PM. Joe Donnelly is at Full Fledged Brewing in Council Bluffs, and Daddy Mak and the Flak are at Upstream Brewing in the Old Market. The Tequila Brothers are at Copacabana.
Ace Monroe does the hair metal thing with some southern rock in the mix. Usually when young bands try to do this, it comes off as a parody, but this band comes off as genuine as can be. When I watch their videos, it is like it is 1987 starting all over again, and who knows? If anyone can kick off that revival in a way that is not a joke, I think it might be Ace Monroe. They perform at Reverb Lounge on Wednesday night.
Metalhead raver Sullivan King will bring an EDM spectacular to Steelhouse Omaha on Wednesday He will bring along YOOKiE, Grabbitz and RZRKT as well.
Sludge metal band Whores. finally returned last year with their second album War. They will bring their noise rock sound to Slowdown and Facet and Violenteer will join them on stage.
It is the 15th anniversary of Feel The Steel from provacative over the top hair metal band Steel Panther. Hear them destroy Goo Goo Dolls, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Papa Roach and Blink-182 on “Death To All But Metal” tonight. You will also hear a lot of other songs that I will let you search out yourself. They celebrate at the Bourbon Theater this evening.
