Reggae, Richie, Lu, Lamarr and Uh Oh
Saturday and Sunday Live Music Lineup-Around 60 Live Music Options For The Weekend
Saturday night will see one of reggae’s living legends come to town and Omaha’s long-running reggae band perform a big outdoor showcase. 79 year-old Burning Spear will be at The Admiral on Saturday night. The reggae great started his career in the late 1960's, has been nominated for a dozen Grammys, and has won two of them. He was nominated just this year for 2023’s No Destroyer album. We are going to say this a couple of times in this post today. See these legends now.
Omaha’s long running reggae band, Rhythm Collective will be performing at the Omaha Performing Arts Music at Miller Park series Saturday evening. They will be joined by Omaha Beat Brigade. The show starts at 6:30PM and is free.
Area indie pop band Uh Oh will be doing a show at The Carriage House at Joslyn Castle on Saturday afternoon. The band promises a special intimate set, and they are bringing on Tom Bartolomei to perform as well. I hope a croquet match happens at some point.
Other things happening around town Saturday will include Irish music with Ellis Island at Brazen Head, a band whose name I haven't heard in years, Nuclear Bees, will be at Cottonwood Cove Marina in Blair, and of course the 50th Anniversary of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival (and final Omaha Summer Arts Festival) continues with music Saturday from Ed Archibald & The Urban Soul All-Stars, Virgin Mary Pistol Grip, Matt Cox and The Midtown Marauders and Juke Butter. Classic rock bands Three Dog Night and Little River Band are at The Astro this evening. There are about forty-five live music options for tonight.
Sunday night is Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind, & Fire. I have seen Earth, Wind, & Fire, and always enjoy Richie when a song comes on, but damn, I looked at the set list, and I guess you never realize how many songs he actually has that are classics. When you add in Commodores songs, it is quite the catalog, and he is playing all the hits. Like all of them. So, I was poking around for tickets, as now I want to go, and it looks like it has sold pretty well. So, I am going to make a Game Day decision on some nose-bleed seats, but like I said at the start of this post, See these legends now.
Michigan indie-Americana band The Crane Wives are at Slowdown on Sunday. The band has a great sound with lots of harmonies, and a laid back vibe. I was just listening to some live recordings, though, and they can pack a punch with some surprisingly soulful vocals that come through more on those live recordings.
Legendary songwriter and performer Lucinda Williams is not slowing down. She has put out eight albums since 2020, including tributes to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, and more. She has also released original music, including last year's Stories From A Rock & Roll Heart. She is at The Admiral on Sunday evening.
Prolific punk and indie songwriter Jon Snodgrass will be at the intimate Pageturners Lounge on Sunday for a show with Chris Webber from Clarence Tilton and Dan McCarthy from McCarthy Trenching. Snodgrass is from the bands Drag The River and Armchair Martian and is touring on his latest solo album, Barge at Will.
Delvon Lamarr and his trio put out albums on the fantastic Colemine record label, known as one of the best soul and funk revival labels out there. I have caught Lamarr at intimate venues such as the now defunct Barley Street Tavern and larger rooms such as the Holland Center. He is a must watch, especially in a venue like The Zoo Bar, where he will be on Sunday night.
