Refuge Release Tonight, Lager At The Zoo Bar, Pecos at The Admiral and Much More
Friday Night Live Music Lineup
I can say I have been watching jazz musician Mitch Towne play for decades now. He has been Omaha’s go-to musician for a long time, and from his early funk and soul bands to playing in songwriter-based projects and beyond, he has always been a jazz man at heart. As the years have gone by, Mitch has gained international recognition and has been able to perform both nationally and internationally. I think he is just getting started. In 2023, he and one of the projects he is involved in, SRT, released an album called Vanguards Of Groove. Locally, he has been involved in projects such as The 9’s, Thousand Houses with Matt Banta, The Mighty Jailbreakers, and more. He is finally going to do the thing many of us have waited a long time for: release his debut album under his own name.
I can credit watching Mitch over the years for my love of jazz organ music, so when I put on his new album Refuge last week, it was easy for me to dial in. If I go into the racks to pull out a jazz album, more often than not, I will pick one with a heavy organ presence, and Refuge will be one that I reach for for many years to come. It’s a truly classic jazz organ album that I can’t imagine fans of that genre or serious jazz enthusiasts not loving. Tetsuya Nishiyama plays guitar on the album, and Jeffery Johnson is on drums. Tonight they will celebrate the release of Refuge at North Omaha Music and Arts. I have to imagine this will be a packed house. They actually just put up an advanced ticket link a couple days ago, and my gut says to use that if you are attended this evening. HERE is that link.
There have been a lot of blues, soul, and roots artists come out of our area, and Kris Lager has certainly become one of the more well-known, thanks to his band's constant touring. His live shows are known for their infectious, joyful energy, and he will bring that to his hometown stage for a rare show at The Zoo Bar on tonight. They are offering advance tickets for this one, so I highly recommend looking into that.
Country rockers Pecos & the Rooftops are coming from Lubbock, Texas to perform at The Admiral tonight. Put on “Last Night’s Lashes” and head on down. Opening the show are the Huser Brothers.
Other happenings tonight include an anniversary party for the Long Bus Short Thoughts podcast. A whole slew of hip-hop artists will be on the lineup at Reverb Lounge for that. Tyler Anthony is your Friday night act at Buck Bar and Grill in Venice. Nevermind, Alice Unchained and Altura are at Waiting Room for a grunge tribute show. There are two separate shows happening at B. Bar tonight, but why not stay for both. You can catch Sailing In Soup and Rhythm Collective there this evening.
