Oh Boy Did I Mess Up-Tuesday Live Music
Two of most talked about artists in music perform in two very different venues tonight
I was warned. "‘MarQ, are you going to Cindy Lee at Pageturners Lounge?”, "MarQ, this show is going to sell out.” I wasn’t quite sure why this artist would be selling out Pageturners. Cindy Lee hasn’t put out an album in a couple of years, and Cindy Lee probably wasn't going to be selling out a show in Omaha based on momentum from that album. Now, I have found out that Cindy Lee has put out an album called Diamond Jubilee, and it’s two hours long and not out on vinyl, CD, or streaming, really. It is only on the Cindy Lee website, and you can download it for free (and donate if you would like-kind of like this site). :) There is also a YouTube stream, which is how I listened to it. I have still only downloaded one song in my life that was not from an area band sending me demos or something. It’s a badge I wear, no matter how dumb. Anyway, so I would not have known about this album unless I read Pitchfork on a regular basis; I don’t. I do hit the site sometimes, but I don’t have it in my regular reading feed. Or, of course, if I listened to my friends.
So, Pitchfork put out a 9.1 review, which is basically being anointed as being the current IT artist and practically a shoe in for Album of the Year consideration. It’s the highest rating they have given in four years. The last time they went that high was for Fiona Apple’s last album. Is the album that cool? I just spent two hours listening to it, and it’s pretty great. It's probably too long for my tastes, but I sure would like to see some of it live.
Who is Cindy Lee? Cindy Lee is the drag queen persona of Patrick Flegel, who was the lead singer of the band Women. Cindy Lee is playing Pageturners tonight, and yes, it is sold out. Two weeks ago, we would all have been able to walk up and walk into this show, but the hype is there, and the timing has that hype coming straight into an intimate venue in Dundee. I truly hope all of you are going have a magical time, and I am going to cross my fingers for you that everyone is there to have a magical time and not talk through this performance or try to record it for clicks.
Always listen to your friends. Well, not always.
What else do we have tonight? Well, the IT person of country music, Zach Bryan is playing the second of his two-night stand at the CHI Health Center Omaha. He has been in town for awhile. I spotted five buses last Saturday morning about a block from my store that turned out to be his. He has been out helping clean up after the storms that hit Friday, and it has come out that he lived in Omaha “during his formative years." This was news to me and everyone else I talked to. He better be careful. Omaha loves to claim things, and the next thing you know, the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge will be the Zach Bryan Pedestrian Bridge. They could name that new Baby Bob after him, I guess.
Touring country artist Alex Williams is out at Bucks Bar and Grill tonight. I dig Alex, and I think a lot of Buck’s regulars do too, as every time I am out there, I see Alex Willams merchandise adorning the heads and backs of patrons. Taco Tuesday at Bucks also. Win/Win right there.
Lincoln has Coco Montoya at The Zoo Bar, and that is a big name in the blues world and has been for a long time.
The Waiting Room has The Strumbellas, who finally followed up 2019’s popular Rattelsnake album with Part Time Believer in February. The feel good indie pop band will have everyone dancing, and clapping, and it should be a joyful time. Reverb Lounge has Left to Suffer, and I just listened to their latest single, and that was a wild ride. It started off as a soulful radio pop ballad and then turned into screamo with blast beats and yeah.
