Here is the APPLE MUSIC PLAYLIST
Adult Mom – Natural Causes The fourth album from Stevie Knipe and band, Natural Causes is, I believe, the first since Knipe's cancer diagnosis. The album is raw and not overly polished, unlike much of today's similar-sounding music. While the lyrics explore themes you might expect, the music itself is generally upbeat. The songs are strong, though they may take a few listens to sink in. Knipe's lyrical exploration will keep you engaged. There are a few musical twists and turns along the way—it doesn’t stay fully in one lane.
Alex Orange Drink – Victory Lab (#23) Alex Orange Drink is the musical project of Alex Zarou Levine from The So-So Glos. Like Stevie Knipe of Adult Mom, Levine is also battling cancer, which is reflected in his new album, released on Conor Oberst’s Million Stars label. Despite the heavy subject matter, the album, like Natural Causes, maintains an upbeat energy. It’s raw, indie, punk-ish—some tracks have very Oberst- and Cursive-like hooks, such as “Everything Is Broken” and “Queen Victoria” (which features Oberst).
Billy Woods – Golliwog I’m not very familiar with Billy Woods, but this hip-hop album caught my attention—it’s odd enough and discombobulated in an intriguing way, with hard-hitting beats and thought-provoking lyrics. It left me wanting to dive deeper into future listens. The album features a lot of guest appearances from artists I enjoy, including El-P, The Alchemist, Ant, and more.
Deradoorian – Ready for Heaven Formerly of Dirty Projectors, Deradoorian has been releasing solo music for over a decade. Ready for Heaven is her 4-ish album since leaving the band, and her first fully solo release since 2020. This is easily my favorite album of the week. It’s the wonky, funky, indie pop that I love but struggle to get my staff and customers at the record store to appreciate. I keep trying. It’s infectious—synth-heavy, bass-driven, cold and sterile at times. I’m really enjoying this one.
I’m With Her – Wild and Clear and Blue I’m With Her is a folk supergroup featuring Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan, and Sara Watkins. They work beautifully together, crafting lush, harmony-filled tunes that feel perfect for a Sunday morning coffee on the porch.
Kara-Lis Coverdale – From Where You Came A Canadian composer known for blending electronics with acoustic instrumentation, Kara-Lis Coverdale creates ambient-adjacent soundscapes. I’m finding this album very enjoyable on the first few listens.
Peter Murphy – Silver Shade After all of Peter Murphy’s health and addiction struggles, I’m glad to hear the Goth-Father sounding strong, with conviction in his delivery. It’s comforting to hear him again. While I don’t expect the songs to hold up to repeated listens, the album certainly has its moments for longtime fans. Boy George makes an appearance, and Trent Reznor may have contributed in some way.
Preoccupations – Ill at Ease I have their 2016 album, which I still pull out occasionally—it has a gritty, darker vibe, similar in tone to Peter Murphy’s work. Since then, they’ve released two more albums that I may or may not have listened to (I don’t remember). This new release features some tracks reminiscent of their 2016 work, but others lean toward a poppier ‘80s sound, akin to The Psychedelic Furs. It’s not a simple listen, but I’m digging it.
Ringdown – Lady on the Bike Ringdown is the duo of Caroline Shaw and Danni Lee Parpan. I’ve become quite a fan of composer Caroline Shaw over the past few years, and this is the most mainstream-sounding work I’ve heard from her—it incorporates vocals that fit a pop song structure. That doesn’t mean it lacks intricacy—there’s plenty happening with the song structures and instrumentation. It’s not an effortless listen, though; it requires some focus to truly sink in. There’s a nice variety here—rhythmic passages, classical nuances, synth layers. Sometimes cold, sometimes dark, sometimes introspective.
TVOD – Party Time A post-punk band. Nothing mind-blowing, but decent and fun.
Men I Trust – Equus Caballus The Canadian band, which played at last year's Outlandia festival, has already put out two albums this year. We talked about the first one in March, which was pretty chill. They’ve always leaned toward dream pop, but this latest release finds them embracing ‘70s and ‘80s soft rock. It’s an enjoyable listen—immediately infectious.
