New Albums From Mitch Towne and Clarence Tilton-One of My Most Anticipated Shows, The Grace Jones of Jazz, Horror Punk and More
Tuesday Night Live Music Lineup
Happy Rex Manning Day! Here is some news about a couple new releases, some shows this evening and full list of happenings. HERE is this weeks full music calendar. I was a little late with the calendar yesterday as I was out late with the hair bands the night prior. Might be a little late with things all week as I have Record Store Day on Saturday to prepare for.
Two big albums from area artists were released this past week. Area country act Clarence Tilton put *Queen of the Brawl* on streaming services on Friday. The album features country legend Marty Stuart and Presley Tucker, daughter of country legend Tanya Tucker. I received a test pressing during my interview with them a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been spinning it a lot. It’s a must-listen for country and Americana fans. They will have a release party for the album on May 2nd at Reverb Lounge. I will have an interview
Area jazz artist Mitch Towne has released his debut solo album, Refuge. Mitch has gained international recognition over the years and that has allowed him to perform both nationally and internationally. In 2023, he and one of his projects, SRT, released an album called Vanguards of Groove. Locally, he has been involved in projects such as The 9’s, Thousand Houses with Matt Banta, The Mighty Jailbreakers, and more. I can credit watching Mitch over the years for my love of jazz organ music, so when I put on this album yesterday morning, it was easy for me to dial in. If I go into the racks to pull out a jazz album, more often than not, I will pick one with a heavy organ presence, and *Refuge* will be one that I reach for for many years to come.
It’s a truly classic jazz organ album that I can’t imagine fans of that genre or serious jazz enthusiasts not loving. Tetsuya Nishiyama plays guitar on the album, and Jeffery Johnson is on drums. This album is available on streaming, and a physical release is also in the works. They will celebrate this release on April 18th at NOMA.
Almost exactly one year ago, I listened to La Lom and decided to see them at Slowdown later that night because I liked what I heard. The Los Angeles League of Musicians is an instrumental group playing cumbia music and more, and they had Slowdown packed with people hungry for this type of music in Omaha. They have since released their self-titled album, which gets weekly spins in the store I work at. It’s just a wonderful listen. I cannot wait to see these talented musicians again, especially in the big room at Slowdown tonight.
Known as "the Grace Jones of jazz", Lady Blackbird will be at the Holland Music Club on tonight. She will be touring on her Slang Spirituals album, and you should check that out, but make sure you check out her 2021 album Black Acid Soul also.
Rockabilly and horror punk band The Koffin Kats are coming to Reverb Lounge tonight. Hear songs from their ten albums including 2024’s Higher Lows.
