Omaha songwriter Jeremy Mercy and his band the Rapture Orphans have released his new album, Heavyweight. He has actually been putting out over the past couple of years, and it looks like he is ready to put a bow on it now. You will be able to physically hold and purchase the CD at Reverb Lounge this evening and hear the music live. Mercy is a longtime contributor to the live stages of our town, and Heavyweight includes some of my favorite work from him, including “Dead Headlights,” “A Song For Love,” and “Say Anything.”. Scott Severin and Stateleigh Holmes will be “greasing up the stage” for the band, as Holmes so eloquently put it on her social media show hype.
Area hip-hop artist Marcey Yates has released his newest album, 9 Months, today on Bandcamp and through streaming channels. Yates messaged me last night and said a physical release will happen eventually also. He hosted an online listening party last night that I was unable to attend, but I have spent the morning listening to the album, and it’s another classic from Yates. He has a lengthy catalog of albums that have come out over the last decade, and he has received much acclaim for those and has also given so much back to the community. Personally, I love his style as it’s focused on lyricism, and the music is classic, interesting, and appealing. I aged out of a lot of modern hip-hop because of so much voice manipulation and such, and there is none of that on Yates releases. In fact, I saw Yates go in an opposite direction as he performed with members of the Omaha Symphony live on stage this year. Yates has some killer albums out there, and I need to spend more time with this one, but on the first couple listens, I think this is among his best. If you are going to dip in before diving in, I would check out “PLANS” and “Time Is Essence.”.
Here is what is happening tonight around the area. In Lincoln you get a double dose of Josh Hoyer at two separate shows. The early show at the Zoo Bar features The Church of the Blues, which is Hoyer, Levi Williams, David Boye, and Joe Gourlay. The later show at The Zoo Bar features Hoyer and his band Soul Colossal. Also in Lincoln, an ugly sweater party with Alli and I, Brad Hoffman, Orion Walsh, and Rich Confer.
NOMA will host Jarekus Singleton, who we talked about HERE in the early week post. There is a whole new movement of young people getting into bands like System of a Down, and you can see Chop Suey do a tribute to them tonight at the Waiting Room with Nevermind Unplugged (Nirvana) and Alice Unchained (Alice In Chains). Old-school Omaha ska band The Wingtips get together for the holidays at B. Bar. The final Yesterday & Today performances for the year are this weekend at Slowdown. They look to be SOLD OUT, so hopefully you got tickets for the holidays.
Las Cruxes, Wake Sessions, Ben Eisenberger Chamber Group provide FREE entertainment at O’Leavers, and the Nathan Paul Trio does the same at Harney Street Tavern. Katie Kasher will be with Wayne Infamous & The Dangerous Movement at Secret Park. Jake Stringer and Ronnie & The Redwoods at Bucks Bar and Grill
