Circus Trees – This makes me sad, and I miss you-This is my favorite album this week. Holy hell these kids look young, and this is their second album! It’s a pair of sisters from Marlborough, Massachusetts doing big fuzzy weighty indie rock with a lot of emotion. There are more intimate and tender moments such as “Save Yourself” as well. They produced the album also-and it sounds like it. It’s well done, but raw and not overdone by someone trying to make this the next big thing. A very genuine album.
BLACKSTARKIDS – SATURN DAYZ-BLACKSTARKIDS are from Kansas City and have a couple albums out and some mix tapes. I they honestly all sound like albums to me. This is officially an album. They make fun throw back hip-hop, pop and R&B. It’s usually light, happy and infectious. I always find them refreshing to listen to.
Beautify Junkyards – Nova-This is a psych folk band from Lisbon. It’s experimental at times, some electronic elements can come into play. I do like some of this, but not really in my wheelhouse, but I do think some people will appreciate this more than me, so I include it. Paul Weller guests on a song.
The Calamatix – The Calamatix-fun reggae and ska pop band. Fun listen-but can’t imagine really going back to it. You might.
Alchemist-Genuine Articulate-hip-hop DJ who puts out a silly amount of albums has his third of the year with Schoolboy Q, Larry June and Conway the Machine guesting. It’s always good, listenable real deal hip-hop though. The same here.
Honeyglaze – Real Deal-second album from the London band. Not post punk-but there is some of that ethos in their music. I love the the patterns in which the vocalist delivers the lines in the music. It really sets the songs apart and makes them stick. This is a must listen album. Good indie rock band.
Jamie xx – In Waves-Fun EDM dance album from the XX member that features Robyn, Panda Bear, Avalanches and more.
Kate Pierson – Radios and Rainbows-this is Kate from the B-52’s. Last year Cindy from the B-52’s put out an incredible album that ended up in my Top 50 albums of last year. I saw this one getting good reviews, and was like hell, will I have another B-52 on my list this year? No, but this is a really fun kitschy disco dance pop album. I probably won’t listen to it again, but I could see some people digging it.
Katy J Pearson – Someday, Now-this is not a member of the B-52’s. This is the third album from the UK indie singer-songwriter. I have always liked a few songs on her albums, this is the same.
Nubya Garcia – Odyssey-third album from the tenor saxophonist. esperanza spalding guests on the opening track. Georgia Anne Muldrow also appears.
Or:la-Trusting Theta-I checked this album because SOAK was on it. They seem to be on a lot of albums these days. Pretty straight up electronic techno record on the Fabric label. Dark and varied.
Tasha – All This and So Much More-New album from the Chicago singer-songwriter who was in the Broadway play Illinoise based on Sufjan Stevens’s album. It has a soulful folk pop sound with a lot of extra production and instrumentation happening. Nice listen.
The Waeve -City Lights-this is Graham Coxon from Blur and Rose Elinor Dougall. It is fine if you are a hardcore Blur fan. It’s pretty pop and rock from Graham, as he can get a little experimental. Can’t imagine a lot of people who are not deep into Blur finding too much interest in this.
Bright Eyes-Five Dice All Threes-I don’t get super deep into Bright Eyes music, but found myself liking Conor’s more Americana type stuff he was doing, and then ended up liking some of the other solo albums. I think this album sounds good-the single “Bells and Whistles” is great, and “Tiny Suicides” is very affecting. Cat Power and Matt Beringer guest on it.
Gonna end off the playlist with three ambient type tracks from the following albums. The Alaskan Tapes album is absolutely stunning and the Alex Henry Foster and Ibukun Sunday I really dug also. I listened to these albums more than anything this week. Was one of those kind of weeks.
Alaskan Tapes – Something Ephemeral
Alex Henry Foster – A Measure Of Shape And Sounds
Ibukun Sunday – Harmony / Balance
