Allegra Krieger – Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine-Fifth album from a very underrated songwriter. This is the epitome of “indie rock singer-songwriter”. I would say this is my favorite album released this week. Think Aimee Mann if she had an edge to her. This album was written after a tragic fire in her apartment that left a neighbor deceased and her saved by a firefighter. That is addressed here. This is a sit down and listen to the lyrics album and I think after a couple listens it will sink in. Dig in her back catalog if you enjoy this.
Allysha Joy – The Making of Silk-This Aussie is from a hip-hop collective called 30/70. This is jazzy, soulful with centered around a lot of deep and definitive bass lines and poetic lyrics. Pretty real deal stuff and definitely worth a listen.
Cursive-Devourer-I have had this for a couple of weeks, and I now I hear it very different that when I first listened. I listened to it in the store while working, and I think I just ended up focusing on the keyboard lines, hooks and the the voice manipulation in “Imposturing” and it threw me off enough to make the whole album like that in my head. Not the case after many listens, though this is certainly a very accessible Cursive album with lots of hooks and fun keyboard lines, but it is also very much a Cursive rock album. This is one you can put on repeat.
Divine Sweater – A Time For Everything-I have never checked out this band, but they have a couple albums out. After a couple listens this is starting to sink in and it is a pretty good indie pop album that will probably end up having a few standout songs more than be an album to listen to over an over again. We will see. The opening track “Counterparts” is an absolute endorphin machine with it’s guitar parts and horn lines hitting the happy part of my brain. I really find the vocals on that song appealing also.
Emily Frembgen – No Hard Feelings-seems like a very unknown artist, but they have five albums out. I enjoyed this, this is nothing like a Jenny Lewis album really, but I keep having Jenny Lewis pop into my head while listening to it-so there must be something there. A nice listen, and some strong songs. Check it out.
Floating Points – Cascade-Floating Point made huge waves with Pharoah Sanders in 2021. Anyone expecting that here, will be disappointed. Anyone expecting the more traditional blissed out yet hard driving and beat filled EDM of Floating Points will find this a fantastic listen. Every time I played it in the store this weekend someone bought it. So there is something appealing here for sure.
Fousheé – Pointy Heights-kind of shocked that this an American artist. It sounds like UK pop R&B to me. There are some really unique and fun songs on here that have some throwback elements to it also. Pop, reggae, dance, etc. Probably too all over the place, but some of the songs really stick and are infectious. One song interpolates “Pass The Dutchie” into the lyrics-which is fun.
Gurriers – Come And See-Irish post punk type band that isn’t immediate, but there is an urgency and sound here that makes me want to listen to it more, and I will. This could and should be a grower.
julie – my anti-aircraft friend-LA shoegaze band that should get a lot of press and great reviews coming up. I think I saw Stereogum gave it album of the week. This will appeal to a lot of people. It’s very 90’s, very angular and well done. So far it is not appealing to me personally, but I know it will be for a lot of you. I will listen more as this is certainly an album that needs more than one listen.
Nada Surf – Moon Mirror-new album from the band who became a very good indie dad pop band. Pleasant listen and they are not reinventing themselves at this point and might be a bit on auto-pilot. If you are a fan check it out.
Nilüfer Yanya – My Method Actor- I was a big fan of the last album. One of my favorite albums of that year. The follow up is very good, Yanya is certainly going for a mature, crafted sound here from the soulful UK indie singer-songwriter. Gonna need more listens as this is not an immediate one, but there is lot here that I look forward to digging into.
Suki Waterhouse – Memoir of a Sparklemuffin-I thought the model and actress’s debut album was OK, but liked her last EP. This new album has many good moments and could be a pretty solid album if it were not 18 songs long. Trimming it down would have benefited this greatly.
Terrace Martin-Nintendo Soul-Keeping up with Terrace is damn near impossible. This one is a jazzy, hip-hop-soul-spaced out trip that features 9th Wonder and Cautious Clay.
Tindersticks – Soft Tissue- gloomy and moody album with some exotica elements to it. They are coming off a couple of soundtracks. Not the easiest listens, but if you are fan they are still doing their thing.
