The next couple weeks are going to be pretty incredible as we ramp up toward to holidays. New Amyl and the Sniffers album next week (which I have and it’s incredible) and then The Cure the following week. Until then here is another week of decent releases, but nothing truly mind-blowing. HERE is this weeks playlist.
Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham – Cunningham Bird-This is a covers album of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks album from 1973. I am sure I have heard that album, even though it is kind of hard to get, but I can’t remember it. This album didn’t jog my memory either. So, for me this just sounds like a nice Andrew Bird album with Madison Cunningham. It’s a very nice listen.
Bear Hands – The Key to What-It has been awhile since we have heard from Bear Hands. First album in around five year and their fifth album over all. This is main stream pop rock music, heavy relying on electronic elements. It’s super catchy, very listenable, and lyrically insipid. 21 Pilots really do not appeal to me, but this band is very much heading in that direction, but I do find some of this, not all, appealing.
Breymer – When I Get Through-Debut album from the Minneapolis artist. Don’t know anything about her, but where she is from. This is a very introspective, mellow, singer-songwriter album with a lot of bedroom pop elements and synths and such. The songs are well crafted, and I have gone back and listened to it twice now. I am enjoying it, but it is a sit down listen for the most part.
Chinese American Bear – Wah!!!-second album from the married couple. They make absolutely delicious twee bedroom indie pop ear worms and sometimes they cut an emotional swath such as with songs like “Love You”.
Blessed Madonna-Godspeed-Chicago DJ’s first album that is not a mix, though at 24 tracks it feels like it. There are some good club songs here, but it’s just too much music to go through more than once. Lot’s of guests including Kylie Minogue, Danielle Ponder, A-Trak, James Vincent McMorrow and more.
Confidence Man – 3AM (LA LA LA)-Third album from the Australian electro duo. This is a full on retro club record and a lot of fun. It is all over the place and feels like a old late night rave all by itself.
High Vis – Guided Tour-third album from the post -punk band. I recently fell for their first album. I haven’t checked out the second album, but a couple people said it wasn’t as good. This album sounds good on first listen, but doesn’t have that same urgency at the first album. I will give it more listens though.
Japandroids – Fate & Alcohol-final album from the rock duo. Sounds like a final album-if you are a fan of the band you will probably find something to enjoy here, but over all it’s not the strongest in the catalog.
Joy Oladokun – OBSERVATIONS FROM A CROWDED ROOM-Some of us saw her in concert not long ago and she was incredible at Slowdown. There are some songs on here that she performed there such as the catchy anthem “Drugs”. This is less pop than the previous album and going for more of concept with spoken word bits and it’s subject matter.
Shower Curtain – words from a wishing well-they call them selves fuzzy “bedroomgaze” and I can hear that. Solid twee shoegaze album that I want to listen to more to see if it grows on me.
